Pilot

Review by Sebastian Torsia

Once in a while, Hornchurch's movie theater treats us to a cinematic gem that makes up for all those rotten
releases we're forced to endure for the most part of the year - and I am delighted to say that Zacharias'
magnificent Pilot is one of them.

Set during World War One, this wonderful homage to yesterday's brave souls follows a wounded British pilot's
desperate attempt to evade his German pursuers. Having been shot down in a spectacular dogfight during the
film's opening moments, the unnamed hero's military training is quickly put to the test in an enemy territory
as beautiful as it is hostile.

When the unfortunate airman stumbles into an inn, he thinks he has found refuge in the care of the locals and
the barman. Unfortunately, the barman has decided that some things are worth more than the pilot's freedom…

The award-winning Ivan Zacharias is on top form here. Displaying wisdom beyond his years, he has distilled a
complicated and complex story down to its key elements with breathtaking effect. Although Zacharias' ruthless
editing leaves Pilot a little shorter than expected, you'll find it more than worth the price of a ticket.
C'est magnifique!
